Katy Gilbert

My name is Katy Gilbert and I am 22 years old. I live in Whitefield with my mum, my dad and my brother Zack who is 18 years old.

I started at Lancastrian School in Didsbury at the age of 2, stayed there till I was 10, then I integrated into mainstream and went to Charlestown Primary in Blackley for 2 years. I stayed down a year as it would have meant me being there for a year and everyone felt it would have been too much of a change for me in a short period of time. After that I went onto Philips High School in Whitefield and spent 5 successful years there leaving there with 4 G C S E’S in Mathematics, Science, I C T and also a entry level in English. So I was 17 when I left there.

After high school, I went on to Bury College for 3 years where I did a vocational course for 1 year where I got qualifications in a Core unit, computing unit and did my City and Guilds in reading, writing, speaking and numeracy. I passed all of them.

The next year I chose to go on a Life Skills course but that didn’t work out because I was at a much higher level than the other people in the class so I moved on to a Skills for Working Life course for the rest of year, passing 5 units.

The final year I was there, I did Health and Social Care in which I came out with 3 merits and a pass.

Then I went to work at the Re:d Centre at the reception for 2 days a week for a year doing posters, leaflets, putting the staff wages in a database using Excel. I loved it there but had to leave as they were making a lot of changes.

After that I was a lady of leisure, till March this year when I started doing Avon, where I am currently on campaign 15. I really enjoy doing it.

In August, I started back doing work for the Re:d Centre, this time for Debi Walker of Bury Parents Partnership, where I am currently arranging a Self Advocates Course for January.

In my spare time, I like to go out with my carers shopping, swimming, bowling and on Tuesday nights I go to Zumba. I also like to chill on my computer watching old programmes on youtube and going on facebook.
