William Case

I have had my personal budget now for 2 years, but before then my parents were my carers 24 hours a day. They didn’t know where to turn to get the help when I was younger so for 20 years of my life my mum wasn’t just my mum, she was my carer.

In 2009 I undertook the sharing knowledge partners in policy course with my mum and After meeting my citizens advocate Sue Harris, who I met though my aunties friend Debi Walker, she helped me get my own home as I wanted to live my own life. Also Sue started to get the ball rolling in September 2009 to get my personal budget.

Since sharing knowledge I now have my personal budget and a wonderful team of PA’s that allow me to live in my own home and live an independent life. I also work as a self advocate which I advocate for many young people with a disability. I also sit on the national council for disabled children as a young ambassador where we work with the national government to influence them to make laws accessible for all young people and children with a disability. I work for Bury parent’s partnership as a disability awareness facilitator with Sue Harris and Debi Walker and I have recently got a position working for Mencap as a learning disability consultant for a project called Inspire Me.

In October 2010 I applied for the Winston Churchill Fellowship which was successful and I carried out my research in America and Canada in July 2011. I met with organisations, people and conferences such as Quality Trust, Colleen Wick (the founder of partners in policy making USA), Bob Williams (head of social security on disability benefits), Doctor Beth mount (a creator on transition tools), International Inclusion Conference, Bernard Carrabelle (founder of the self advocacy association of new York state) which took me to Washington DC, Minneapolis, Toronto and New York State. My plan is to publish my research on the Winston Churchill web site in November 2011.

If you would like more information on my work, Winston Churchill research or have any other questions to ask me you can contact Debi Walker by this email address debi.walker@togethertrust.org or Call The Bury Parents Forum Team on 0161 763 5001
